Su caracter\u00edstica anat\u00f3mica m\u00e1s distintiva es la modificaci\u00f3n de su primer par de alas en estructuras r\u00edgidas y endurecidas llamadas <strong>\u00e9litros<\/strong>. Estos no cumplen una funci\u00f3n propulsora en el vuelo, sino que act\u00faan como un escudo protector para el segundo par de alas membranosas y para el abdomen, permiti\u00e9ndoles colonizar ambientes hostiles, como el subsuelo o el interior de la madera, sin da\u00f1ar sus \u00f3rganos vitales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Desde el punto de vista biol\u00f3gico, los cole\u00f3pteros son insectos holomet\u00e1bolos, lo que significa que atraviesan una <strong>metamorfosis completa<\/strong> que incluye los estadios de huevo, larva, pupa y adulto. Su \u00e9xito evolutivo es asombroso; habitan en casi todos los ecosistemas del planeta (excepto en el mar abierto y los polos) y desempe\u00f1an roles ecol\u00f3gicos fundamentales como polinizadores, descomponedores de materia org\u00e1nica, depredadores de otras plagas y recicladores de nutrientes. Con una variedad de tama\u00f1os que va desde menos de un mil\u00edmetro hasta los 17 cent\u00edmetros del escarabajo tit\u00e1n, este grupo demuestra una plasticidad adaptativa que ha permanecido exitosa por m\u00e1s de 250 millones de a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Coleoptera de Chile<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En Chile, el orden Coleoptera est\u00e1 representado por 102 familias y aproximadamente 4.500 especies, siendo as\u00ed el grupo m\u00e1s diverso de insectos a nivel nacional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>N\u00famero de taxones en Chile: <\/strong>4.500 (especies) aprox.
