Con casi 160.000 especies conocidas, es uno de los grupos de insectos m\u00e1s diversos, despu\u00e9s de Coleoptera y Diptera. Los lepid\u00f3pteros se diferencian de otros insectos por carecer de cercos en el extremo del abdomen, as\u00ed como por tener el cuerpo y las alas cubiertos de escamas. En la mayor parte de las especies, las piezas bucales est\u00e1n adaptadas para chupar l\u00edquidos, aunque hay especies que carecen de ellas, y en las m\u00e1s primitivas a\u00fan retienen su capacidad de masticaci\u00f3n. Los lepid\u00f3pteros se encuentran estrechamente relacionados con el orden Trichoptera, insectos similares a polillas, con larvas y pupas acu\u00e1ticas, con los que conforman el superorden Amphiesmenoptera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Actualmente se reconocen cuatro sub\u00f3rdenes de lepid\u00f3pteros: Zeugloptera, con la familia Micropterigidae; Aglossata, que incluye exclusivamente a la familia Agathiphagidae; Heterobathmiina, con la familia Heterobathmiidae, y Glossata, que incluye el 99,9% de las especies descritas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lepidoptera<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>de Chile<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En Chile se estima que el orden Lepidoptera est\u00e1 representado por m\u00e1s de 1.600 especies, incluidas en 25 superfamilias y 63 familias, pertenecientes a los sub\u00f3rdenes Zeugloptera, Heterobathmiina y Glossata.
