Recuperado el [inserte fecha de consulta] de [URL]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Hydrozoa<\/strong><\/strong>&nbsp;Owen, 1843<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El phylum Cnidaria constituido por las clases Hydrozoa y Scyphozoa, comprende organismos planct\u00f3nicos conocidos generalmente como medusas, de las cuales se han estimado alrededor de 850 especies en todos los oc\u00e9anos. En aguas costeras y oce\u00e1nicas del Pac\u00edfico Suroriental, entre Arica y el Cabo de Hornos, se ha determinado la presencia de 165 especies (155 hidromedusas y 10 escifomedusas). Las hidromedusas son peque\u00f1as (0,2 a 10 cm de di\u00e1metro), mientras que las escifomedusas son de un tama\u00f1o mucho mayor (hasta 60-70 cm de di\u00e1metro). Las medusas son muy hermosas y se caracterizan por su forma campanular, ser transparentes (aunque hay algunas especies de notable coloraci\u00f3n) y naturaleza gelatinosa debido a su gruesa capa intermedia o mesoglea. En la regi\u00f3n superior interna de la campana se encuentra la boca, pero en algunas especies se encuentra en el extremo inferior de una prolongaci\u00f3n tubular denominada manubrio. En la base de la campana se localizan los tent\u00e1culos cubiertos de cnidocistos, que son c\u00e9lulas urticantes que producen toxinas para paralizar sus presas. La cantidad de tent\u00e1culos es muy variable (entre 2 y 10 a varias centenas). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Las medusas son carn\u00edvoras y se desplazan en el medio acu\u00e1tico con sus tent\u00e1culos extendidos para paralizar y capturar sus presas, aliment\u00e1ndose principalmente de cop\u00e9podos, quetognatos, medusas, as\u00ed como de larvas y juveniles de peces y crust\u00e1ceos. Estos organismos tienen un ciclo reproductivo caracterizado por una alternancia de generaciones, donde la fase asexual est\u00e1 representada por la fase p\u00f3lipo (hidroide) que se fija en sustratos bent\u00f3nicos, que va madurando y liberando peque\u00f1as medusitas machos y hembras que en la fase sexual se reproducen sexualmente en la columna de agua completando su ciclo reproductivo. Las medusas se distribuyen fundamentalmente en aguas epipel\u00e1gicas (0-200 m), pero tambi\u00e9n hay especies que habitan en aguas mesopel\u00e1gicas m\u00e1s profundas (200-1000 m o m\u00e1s). Son m\u00e1s abundantes en aguas costeras, especialmente en primavera y verano, cuando el aumento de temperatura favorece una mayor disponibilidad tr\u00f3fica y mayor actividad reproductiva.
