Son peces \u00f3seos de aguas profundas con una silueta anguiliforme extremadamente alargada, caracterizada por un cuerpo comprimido lateralmente que se estrecha de forma gradual hasta terminar en una cola muy fina como un l\u00e1tigo, carente de aleta caudal. A diferencia de las anguilas espinosas (Notacanthidae), los halosaurios s\u00ed poseen una aleta dorsal corta y bien definida, sin espinas duras, y destacan por tener un hocico c\u00f3nico y prominente empujado hacia adelante sobre una boca ventral, el cual est\u00e1 equipado con \u00f3rganos sensoriales altamente especializados para detectar presas en la penumbra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Se distribuyen en los fondos bent\u00f3nicos de casi todos los oc\u00e9anos del planeta, habitando sobre la plataforma continental y las llanuras abisales a profundidades que van desde los 500 hasta m\u00e1s de 3,000 metros. Se desplazan nadando con movimientos ondulantes muy cerca del limo o la arena, donde buscan crust\u00e1ceos, moluscos y gusanos marinos.
